How to Use the Paver Calculator

Enter your patio or walkway's length and width in feet, your paver's size in square inches, and a waste factor for cuts around edges and curves. The calculator returns your total area and the number of pavers to order.

How the Calculation Works

The calculator finds your total area (length × width) and your paver's coverage (size in square inches ÷ 144, since there are 144 square inches in a square foot). Dividing area by paver coverage gives a base paver count, which is then increased by your waste percentage to account for cuts, and rounded up to a whole paver.

Example Calculation

A 15×10 ft patio using 96 sq in pavers (a common 8×12 in paver) with 10% waste: area = 150 sq ft. Paver coverage = 96 ÷ 144 = 0.667 sq ft. Base count = 150 ÷ 0.667 = 225. With 10% waste: 225 × 1.10 = 247.5, rounded up to 248 pavers.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much waste factor should I use for pavers?

10% is reasonable for a simple rectangular layout with a running-bond or basic pattern. More complex patterns (herringbone, circular, or curved edges) generate more cut waste and often need 15–20%.

Does this include base material like gravel or sand?

No — this calculates paver quantity only. A proper paver installation also needs a compacted gravel base and a leveling sand layer beneath the pavers, which are typically calculated separately using the same area figure.

What paver pattern uses the least material?

A simple running-bond or stack-bond pattern with rectangular pavers generates the least waste, since most cuts are simple straight cuts along the edges rather than complex angled pieces.
