How to Use the Shingle Bundle Calculator

Enter your total roofing squares (or let it auto-fill from the Roofing Squares calculator) and the number of bundles per square for your shingle type — 3 is standard for most 3-tab and architectural shingles. The calculator returns the total bundles to order.

How the Calculation Works

Shingles are sold in bundles sized so a set number of bundles covers exactly one roofing square (100 sq ft). The calculator multiplies your roofing squares by the bundles-per-square rate for your shingle type and rounds up to a whole bundle, since suppliers don't sell partial bundles.

Example Calculation

14.3 roofing squares at 3 bundles per square: 14.3 × 3 = 42.9, rounded up to 43 bundles.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are all shingles 3 bundles per square?

Most standard 3-tab and architectural (laminate) shingles are 3 bundles per square, but some heavier premium or designer shingles are packaged 4 or 5 bundles per square. Check the specific product's packaging or spec sheet before ordering.

Should I order extra bundles beyond this number?

This number already reflects your roofing squares total, which typically includes a waste factor if you used the Roofing Squares calculator first. Many roofers still keep a few spare bundles on hand for repairs or color-matching down the road.

How many shingles are in a bundle?

It varies by shingle style and manufacturer — commonly around 26–29 shingles per bundle for 3-tab, fewer for heavier architectural styles. The bundle count, not the shingle count, is what matters for this calculator since that's how they're sold.
