How to Use the Trim & Baseboard Calculator

Enter your total trim run in linear feet, the average width of your trim or baseboard in inches, your number of coats, and your paint's coverage rate. Because trim jobs use much less paint than walls, this calculator gives its answer in quarts rather than gallons.

How the Calculation Works

The calculator converts your linear footage of trim into actual paintable area by multiplying by the trim's width (converted from inches to feet). That area is multiplied by your number of coats, divided by your coverage rate, and converted to quarts (4 quarts per gallon), rounded up to the nearest whole quart.

Example Calculation

150 linear feet of 4-inch-wide trim, 2 coats, at 350 sq ft/gal coverage: area = 150 × (4 ÷ 12) = 50 sq ft. Quarts = ((50 × 2) ÷ 350) × 4 = 1.14, rounded up to 2 quarts.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does trim use quarts instead of gallons?

Trim and baseboard runs cover far less surface area than walls, so a full gallon is usually far more than needed — quarts are the more practical unit, and many paint brands sell trim/enamel paint in quart cans specifically for this kind of job.

Should I use a different type of paint for trim?

Many painters use a semi-gloss or satin enamel for trim and baseboards, since it's more durable and wipeable than flat wall paint. Enamel coverage rates can differ slightly from standard wall paint — check your specific product's label.

How do I measure linear feet of trim?

Add up the length of every piece of trim or baseboard you're painting — around the room's perimeter for baseboards, or the total length of door and window casing. It doesn't need to account for width, since that's handled separately by this calculator.
