How the Calculation Works

Every unit in a category is defined relative to one base unit — feet for length, square feet for area, cubic feet for volume, and pounds for weight. Converting between any two units is a two-step process: your input value is first converted to the base unit, then from the base unit into your target unit. This means the converter can handle any combination of units, including imperial-to-metric conversions, using the same underlying math.

Example Calculation

Converting 1 foot to yards: 1 ft is already the base unit for length, so it's simply divided by the yard's conversion factor (3 ft per yard), giving 1 ÷ 3 = 0.333 yards.
