How the Calculation Works
Like stud spacing, joist and rafter spacing is measured on-center (center of one piece to the center of the next). The calculator converts your span to inches, divides by the spacing, rounds up, and adds one for the starting piece at the edge of the span — the same logic used for wall studs, applied to horizontal framing members.
Example Calculation
A 16 ft floor span at 16-inch on-center spacing: total = ceil((16 × 12) ÷ 16) + 1 = ceil(12) + 1 = 13 joists.
Frequently Asked Questions
What spacing should I use for a deck vs. a roof?
16" on-center is the standard default for floor joists and rafters in most residential framing. Some deck boards and heavier roofing materials call for tighter 12" spacing — always confirm against your decking or roofing manufacturer's span rating and your local code.
Does this account for doubled joists around openings?
No — this gives you the field count for evenly spaced joists across the span. Openings for stairwells, chimneys, or skylights typically need doubled header and trimmer joists framed around them, which should be added on top of this count.
Is this the same as rafter length?
No — this calculates how many rafters or joists you need, not how long each one should be. Rafter length depends on your roof pitch and run; see the Roofing Squares calculator for pitch-related math.
