How the Calculation Works
"Field studs" are the studs spaced evenly along the wall, not counting extras for framing details. The calculator divides the wall length (converted to inches) by your spacing, rounds up, and adds one — that extra stud accounts for the starting stud at the beginning of the wall, since on-center spacing measures from stud to stud, not from the wall's edge.
Example Calculation
A 24 ft wall at 16-inch on-center spacing: field studs = ceil((24 × 12) ÷ 16) + 1 = ceil(18) + 1 = 19. Add 6 extra studs for two door openings and a corner, and the total comes to 25 studs.
Frequently Asked Questions
Should I use 16" or 24" on-center spacing?
16" on-center is the most common for load-bearing walls and is required by many codes for exterior walls. 24" on-center uses fewer studs and is sometimes allowed for non-load-bearing interior partition walls — check your local code before choosing wider spacing.
How many extra studs do openings need?
A standard door or window opening typically needs a king stud and a jack (trimmer) stud on each side — 4 extra studs per opening — plus a header. Corners typically need 2–3 extra studs depending on your corner framing method.
Does this include top and bottom plates?
No — this calculator counts vertical studs only. Top and bottom plates are typically ordered as separate long lumber runs (often doubled at the top plate) sized to your wall's total length, not as individual stud-length pieces.
